The Sun

The sun has come, I know,
   For yesterday I stood
   Beside it in the wood-
But O how pale, how softly did it glow.
I stooped to warm my hands
   Before its rain-washed gold;
   But it was pebble-cold,
Startled to find itself in these dark lands.
